The snapshot of Albany residents changed between 1990 and 2000.
In 2000, Albany was:

  • More affluent. Median household income increased from
    $26,666 to $39,409, median family income from $31,977 to $46,094,
    and per capita income from $11,444 to $18, 570.
  • Older. Median
    age increased to 34.6 from 32.7.
  • More diverse. The white population
    decreased from 96.1% to 91.7% white. The foreign born increased
    from 2.0% to 4.4 %.
  • Better educated. High school graduates or
    higher increased from 81.1% to 84.7% and bachelor’s degree
    or higher from 12.4% to 18.4%.
  • More likely to be homeowners -
    increasing from 51.9% to 59.5%.
  • Similar in household size. From
    2.40 to 2.49 persons.
  • More likely to be employed. From 6.9% to
    5.5% unemployed.
  • Less likely to work in manufacturing. From 27.0%
    to 20.5%.
  • Less likely to be in poverty status. From 11.3% of
    families to 9.3%.
  • More likely to be spending a high percentage
    (over 35%) of income on housing costs
    . From 9.2% to 15.7% for
    homeowners and from
    31.7% to 38.5% for renters.

Albany’s 2000 Census population was 40,852 people. The Albany
region included 78,234 people in 2000.

Albany’s population is projected to grow to 53,200 people
by 2020. This averages to roughly a 1.4% growth rate per year for
Albany. Portland State University estimated Albany’s 2002
population to be 42,280.

Downtown Albany serves a diversity of ages. As typical across
the nation, Albany’s population is increasing in age. The
median age was 34.6 years in Albany in 2000, which is up from 32.7
years in 1990. The Primary Market had the highest percentage of
persons between 35 and 54, while the Albany Region had the highest
percentage of persons ages 65 and over in 2000.
